What does the HCG diet entail?

The HCG diet plan essentially allows you to eat small portions of meals, restricting you to consume only 500 calories. Along with this calorie limitation, the plan requires the dieter to regularly consume a certain set amount of the HCG hormone, which enhances your metabolism, curbs your appetite and helps your body burn the accumulated fat.

The HCG diet claims to rid you of at least a pound a day, going up to even 3 pounds a day if you strictly adhere to the plan. It does not require you to exercise the fat off – in fact, it discourages physical exertion which definitely flies well with lazy buggers like me. The only annoying thing is the fact that once you’re on the diet, you aren’t allowed to stray from the plan, at all. You are supposed to take in just 500 calories and not one more (latest research has new findings about the calorie intake). You do not have the luxury of cutting it loose once in a while and going for larger meal portions or indulging in a chocolate craving. There’s no wiggle room in the diet plan and you must consume the requisite volume of HCG and the FDA allows taking medically prescribed HCG.

What you are and aren’t allowed to eat during the HCG diet?

We’ve already established the fact that the HCG diet plan restricts your calorie intake which means that you’ll have to watch what you eat. Breakfast is optional and you are only allowed beverages. You can drink coffee or tea but milk is not allowed and neither is sugar. You can add zero-calorie sweeteners, though. As far as lunch and dinner meals are concerned, you must remember to carefully monitor your calorie consumption and take small portions. Meat is allowed, as long as it is a small portion of around three to four ounces of lean, non-marbled meat. You can take breadsticks or a Melba toast with each meal. Vegetables are allowed too, as long as you make sure that they are low-calorie and you take carefully measured portions to stay within the 500 calorie mark in a day. Obviously, sweets and baked goods are out of question. Moreover, in the duration of your diet, you aren’t allowed to drink alcohol.

Administration of HCG and the FDA Approvals

As mentioned earlier, this diet involves administering some preset quantity of the HCG hormone every day and there are two ways commonly employed to do so. It is either taken in orally in the form of drops, also called “homeopathic HCG drops” that the FDA is slightly wary about and the other method is through intramuscular injections that are approved by the FDA. You need to choose the mode of administration you are comfortable with, so that you won’t be inconvenienced when you have to take in the drug every day. All that sounds easy enough, I mean both the meal plan and the drug administration. So now, let’s talk about the primary concerns that the FDA has regarding HCG diets.

So now, you must be wondering that the HCG diet doesn’t sound all that bad as some people might make it out to be, then what are the concerns about HCG and the FDA warnings that people go around touting. There are, of course, various fad diets that are equally – if not more restrictive – than the HCG diet. However, if they are official, then the FDA would warn you against those diets too. According to Simeons, the British endocrinologist responsible for the origination of the diet, the consumption of the HCG hormone will make sure that you do not feel the need to eat as often as you normally do. This would make sure that your body does not compel you to eat more than the limited 500 calories, which means you would not be uncomfortably hungry all the time as you would be in another low-calorie diet.
